Cloud services will change the game in music business
20 Apr 2011 18:52Amazon launched Cloud Player last month. It gives possibility for music listeners to store their music libraries in their servers where the music is also backed up. No worries about losing your music even in case your own hardware breaks. Probably even more important feature is that you can access this music cloud from any device that is connected to internet and stream music directly from your own music locker/library. It is extremely convenient, isn't it.
This makes digital music purchases even better solution as they used to be. Basically there are two ways people can license music today:
1) Lifetime license (so called a la Carte download, actually it should not be called download anymore because it can also be streamed from your music locker in the cloud). It works well in the following cases:
* Preferred (inexpensive) solution for occasional music buyer (non-heavy consumer)
* For exclusive content not available in rental catalogues
* When digital content is bundled with physical products
* When you buy music as a gift
2) Time limited rental model (Spotify style)
* Preferred (inexpensive) solution for heavy consumer
There are also other services in the market offering cloud storage for music and other media. You can take a look at the following solutions (they both work well, I tested their Android and Desktop Applications):
Apple will probably introduce its own cloud drive soon and Google, too. I bet Google is going to publish an open API for developers. Then you will see some great applications making it easy to sync and play your music. Imagine you buy a song in a music shop and in checkout you just click to choose that your music will go directly to your own account in this kind of locker service. And you know that you can access it with all your devices (phone, pc, tv, car, ...)
Yes, we will use this API as soon as it is available!
We are living interesting times. It is exciting to see the moves of big players in the market. And looks like we are going to see several moves in a short run.
Meanwhile, help children in Japan and buy a great song
